Software Taught
Grasshopper
This two-day Computational Grasshopper Workshop focuses on building a practical understanding of computational design as it is applied within architecture. Led by Oliver Thomas alongside the computational team at Heatherwick Studio - including Carmen Hu, Alfredo Chavez, and Theo Peju - the workshop combines foundational teaching with live project application.
Participants will explore how scripts are structured, adapted, and translated into fabrication logic, gaining insight into how computational design moves from concept to physical construction through real-world workflows.
The workshop centres around Nebula Shroom Grove, a live installation being developed for Burning Man by a team of Colombian designers. The project explores loneliness within a hyper-connected world and draws inspiration from the interconnected behaviour of mushrooms, using modular parametric structures to create a network of spatial nodes that act as spaces for rest, reflection, and connection.
Silvia Rueda shares the project’s design intent and current build process. All proceeds directly support the construction of Nebula Shroom Grove, allowing participants to develop computational skills while learning the challenges of a live installation.
You will learn how to:
• Build a foundation in computational thinking and Grasshopper workflows
• Understand how parametric scripts translate into fabrication systems
• Apply computational design principles to a real-world architectural installation
