Essential Details

  • About the Masterclass

Environmental performance is becoming an increasingly important driver of architectural design. As projects grow in complexity, designers require faster and more integrated methods for evaluating factors such as solar access, daylight performance, and radiation exposure throughout the design process.

This free live workshop introduces Cyclops, a GPU-accelerated environmental analysis tool developed by Foster + Partners. Led by Applied Research + Development (ARD) team at Foster + Partners, the session explores how near real-time environmental simulation can be embedded directly within architectural workflows, allowing performance data to inform design decisions from the earliest stages of a project.

Through practical demonstrations and practice-based case studies, participants will learn how Cyclops leverages modern graphics hardware to perform solar obstruction, daylight autonomy, and cumulative radiation analyses at façade, building, and urban scales. The workshop also explores how GPU-accelerated workflows can significantly reduce simulation times compared to traditional approaches, creating new opportunities for iterative and performance-driven design.

    You will learn how to:

    • Understand the principles behind GPU-accelerated environmental analysis
    • Evaluate solar obstruction, daylight autonomy, and cumulative radiation performance
    • Integrate environmental simulation into Rhino and Grasshopper workflows
    • Apply scalable analysis methods across façade, building, and urban contexts
    • Use performance data to support faster and more informed design decisions
